I am in Northern wisconsin and have used a St. Croix stove for 1 month. Wish I had it all year. I had good luck with Marth Pellets from Marathon Wisconsin until everyone ran out. I am now using Somerset Premium which are shipped in from Kentucky. There seems to be way more ash than I had with Marth.
A new pellet plant is opening 15 miles from me, so hopefully I can get them there……………if they are good.

    • Ally Woods says:

Gary, which other pellet brands have you tried in WI? I am also looking around there and have seen Lumberjack (which I think is from the plant in Hayward) and Indeck (Ladysmith) in addition to Marth; I’ve had the best luck with Indeck so far, really low ash.

  2. dawn powers/smith says:

Brand new at heating with a pellet stove. My husband and I are going into our first winter this year. I have learned alot from your comments. I was just wondering if anyone has purchased Somerset pellets and what kind of luck you’ve had with them. Another one we have come across is Marth. Any comments on either brand would be greatly appreciated.

    • BUMMED says:

Somerset Pellet is by far the best wood pellet on the market , I`ve used others and there is no comparison .

  3. picklebelly says:

has anyone used or is using somerset hardwood pellets made in somerset, ky.?/
how do you like them.?? & in what kind of furnace/stove are you burning.??

    thanks

    • Mike says:

The somerset pellets are some of the best on the market right now. They burn great and don’t leave that much ash.

    • Mark says:

I used somerset for 3 years and they are the best that i have found. Low ash and good heat. This year I sadly can not find them here in Auburn, Indiana.
      Mark

    • Roger Sparks says:

I bought some Somerset pellets yesterday to try in my Kozi model 100 stove and can’t believe how hot they burn with no ash at all. They made a huge difference in the heat output of my stove. I will gladly drive 100 miles roundtrip and pay more for a pellet of this quality. I bought my Somerset pellets at Tractor Supply in Springfield Illinois for 4.49 a bag and will be going back for more!

  4. Matt says:

In regard to the people asking about Somerset Pellets out of KY, I used some at the tail end of last winter and I LOVED THEM. They were hot burning and very low ash. I burned about #3000 before having to clean out my furnace. My only problem is I cant find them this year where I get my pellets…. I dont even recal haing to celan out the pot more than once a week. I am currently Using Marth pellets out of Marathon Wisconsin and they burn nice, but I have to clean out the pot every 18 hours or so as it turns into one big clinker.

  5. Marty says:

    Matt,

I have burned both Somerset & Marth pellets each of which I find to be adequate. The best I have ever burned has been Homewood out of Canada. I recently talked to their regional/US salesmen and he said that they are having a hard time keeping up.

With the Enviro Evolution I have to be picky about my pellets. Wish I would have waited a year and bought the Quadra Fire MT Vernon. My brother has one and works great and whisper quiet even at the high setting.

  6. ken says:

I used somerset pellets and liked the very much . High btus and low ash . But cant find the in the Cincinnati area .

    • Michael Cornett says:

Tractor supply , Harrison , Ohio has Somerset Pellets they`re the best pellet I`ve used , high BTU . low ash.

    • Edwin J. Karlis says:

  7. Kevin says:

Just bought a ton of somerset pellets at TSC was using country boy. There is no comparison the somerset pellets all burn no clinkers and only clean my stove every couple days was cleaning twice a day. Gained about 20 degrees in out put temperture. I will be looking for somerset pellets for next year.

  8. steve says:

We love the somerset pellets. Low ash and good heat. Have a hard time finding them though.

  9. Beth Miller says:

Menard’s has Somerset Pellets ($4.99/40lb bag). They are the best pellets we’ve found. I am located in Rushsylvania, OH. We drive to Lima to Menards to get them. We’ve triend Kentucky Colonel – Awful, Pennington – Awful, and OHP – LOTS of ash, but better than the other two. Somerset burn completely and give off high BTU.

    • Rich L says:

I agree with you. We have heated our whole house with a cast iron Harmon Accentra stove for the past 7 years. We tried all the brands you did plus Lignetics and two others that were so bad i forget their names. Last year with Somerset, I was able to ‘fine tune’ the stove to the point that a ton of pellets yields one pan of ash (9″ X 13″ X 7″) and only have to empty the pan & clean the stove every 4-6 weeks. Menards in Marion & Mansfield occasionally run sales on pellets as low as $3.47 / 40 lb. bag.

      • Adam C says:

I also have a Harmon Accentra stove that I use to heat my 2100 sq ft house. If i had a choice Somerset would be the ONLY pellet I burn in my stove. 1 ton equals one ash pan full. I also have less creosote buildup with Somerset. With a clean stove to start I only have to clean the glass and empty the pan for each ton of pellets I burn. I go through 3.5 tons per winter season in NW OH. And I only have to do a breakdown cleaning one time per heating season!!! If there is a better pellet out there I and many other who fight over the Somerset pellets here have not found one! Next season I am looking to contact Somerset directly to see what kind of deal I can get for a 5 – 10 ton purchase!

Also to note, I can only find them at Menards in my area, not Lowe’s, not Home Depot, not Ace, and not even TSC!

  10. Tim says:

I agree Somerset is a great pellet. No dust
in the houst when pouring the bag into the hopper.
A big plus as mine is a fireplace insert in the
living room. Very little dust, ash, fines and burn
well. What more can you ask?
(other than make more, cheaper and plentiful)

  11. Timothy says:

Agree,,, Somerset is a great pellet.
On par is Pike Pellets or Greene Team.
All good pellets. Tried dozens and these
    are the best I tried.

  12. John Callison says:

SOMERSET PELLETS ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT WORK IN MY ENGLANDS STOVE. THEY ARE HARDWOOD AND THIS STOVE MUST HAVE HARDWOOD PELLETS. SOFTWOODS WONT WORK. THE AUGER MOTORS HOWL WITH OTHER PELLETS. WHERE DO I GET THEM ON WEST COAST?

  13. somerset pellets are the best!!!! i purchased 5 bags in 6 different brands of pellets that were available in my local area and have come to the conclusion that i will only burn somerset brand pellets. i dont care if i have to drive 50 miles to get them or pay a dollar a bag more. i get a very little ash in the stove, nice hot clean burn, more value for the money spent. i only heat with my pellet stove and it is important to me to get the best fuel product i can find. i notice a huge difference when i burn these pellets. try a few bags yourself and see how little ash build up you get inside your fire box or how clean the glass stays compared to other brands. im sold.

  14. Geoff Christensen says:

I have tried about 12-15 different brands and would use only Somerset if I could find them. I burned a few tons last winter in Maine in my Thelin Parlour 3000 stove. They burned hot and produced almost no ash while burning 3 bags per day on high. I only had to clean my stove every 2 weeks, compared to every other day for all other brands. And even then, there was no ash in the stove; I only had to chip off what looked like a piece of coal that formed on the fir pot. Simply amazing. Unfortunately, I can no longer find them in stock. If you are lucky enough to find them, I would recommend giving them a try.

  15. hatter1111 says:

brian goettner uses somerset pallets . They are the best !!

  16. R says:

These burn hotter than any other pellet I have used. Our stove goes from 1-5 heat setting. we can leave it on 1 and it will be 75-80 in our (1900sq.ft) house.

  17. Eric says:

    Hi,

I’ve tried “Inferno Wood Pellets” from Lowes… they suck. Way too much fines and because there are so much of them, they sit high on the edge of the hopper and not feed properly.

I have a Harmon Accentra insert set to Stove Temperature mode. This works nice because turning the fan low keeps the temperature of the hot air hot.. and with low fan noise where having the fan go blowing high; that cools the pipes where by you’ll get cooler air coming out.

I’m trying Somersets and Pikes Pellets ….

  18. Timothy says:

Having tried many others I really like Somerset. Low ash and dust. This matters most as my insert is in the living room and dust from pouring and cleaning is a maijor issue. I wish I had a ready supply. Last time I got them from Lowe’s.

  19. Timothy says:

    Pike pellets are to asshy!!

  20. Earmit says:

I have burned dozens of brands and Somerset is the best
    so far.
I’m in SE CT and the only way to get them is to visit Lowe’s
each week until they show up. Neither Somerset or Lowe’s
had any schedule or prediction. So, I guess I’ll have to stalk
Lowe’s at the end of the season or beginning of next for my
supply for next year. Too bad it has to come to this
to buy the product you want.

  21. george welch says:

the best pellets i’ve ever used. they burn hot and leave little ash.
I live in mass and have only found them at lowe’s.
If any one can tell me were in mass I CAN LOCATE MORE!!!!!!
I would travel far and wide to get a couple of tons.
    1george_welch@comcast.net

  22. Angela says:

Like others here I have tried dozens of Pellets with the somerset being the best in my pellet stove. I have a little rascal by country flame. The Somerset burns a lot hotter and has a lot less ash in my burner than the others I have tried. Last year my favorite was the Country boy white lighning pellet but Somerset blows it away.

  23. Barbara Wojnicki says:

Somerset wood pellets burn the hottest and cleanest of any pellet I have used in my St. Croix insert. I used to buy them at Menards, but now Menards carries a different brand. I live in St. Charles Illinois. Where can I buy Somerset pellets now, which in my opinion, are the best pellets manufactured?

    • Mike says:

You may want to check at Lowes and/or Tractor Supply. You should also let the manager know at your Menards store that you would like for them to carry the Somerset Brand again.

  24. Ernie says:

I sell both pellets and stoves…..there is a world of difference in pellets…..you just get what you pay for…..if you shop for price alone expect to get poor quality…..and will wish you had shopped quality instead…….i sell Lignetics (1% ash) and Hamer super premium (1/2% ash). Both are good quality products…….

In 2008-2009 there was a shortage of pellets on the east coast…….we had pellets shipped in from other manufactures out of state and they were poor and lots of headaches, ash, and clinkers!!….both manufactures claimed they were hard wood, low ash, and burned hot, but they did not deliver!!……but our clients were happy to have heat as many rely 100% on pellets for heat…….but disappointed with their performance……some drove over 1 1/2 hours to get pellets for heat….

This season (2009-2010) they all are glad we can once again obtain our usual premium brands……….NOTE…if there is no PELLET INSTITUTE membership, seal and information box on the bag, you are buying a pig-in-a-poke…….you have no idea what is in the bag!!……..

Once the euphoria of the low price fades, the depression of poor quality sets in……..

    PS……i burn pellets too..

    • garrie says:

I started using a pellet stove in Jan/09 i used whatever i could find on sale, because I was told that premium pellets where hard to come by around md. at the time.

I got a ton of lignetics to start this year. The difference in the amount of heat is unbelievable, at a fraction of the amount of ash.

my wife actually thinks I did something to the stove instead.

I need another ton soon , i hope they are still around.

    • John says:

I see the Somerset bag shows the pellet institute membership you are talking about. The bag advertises low (1%) ash and all hardwood. Most people seem to be ok with them. Did you try them this year?

  25. William says:

These pellets burn hotter with less ash than any other brand I used. Far greater BTU per ton. Get them when you can, we are sold out in Michigan, as the retailers are selling cheaper product. Sommerset is worth the cost!!!

    • Steve says:

Long Pond – Wood Pellets & Stove Shop is selling Somerset Pellets. We have been burning them in our shop and can not believe the heat and low ash. These pellets are exceeding my expectations.
Call for pick up or delivery scheduling.

  26. Claudale says:

Somersets are the hottest I have ever used. What a difference, from having the house in the low 60s on 4 to having it close to 70 on 3.

I hope Lowe’s doesn’t do what Home Depot did and contract out with someone to make a brand just for them (Winter Warmth isn’t bad, but Lowes has Somersets a lot)

  27. Jacob says:

Glad I just live down the road from Somerset Pellet Company.

  28. gary says:

Somerset pellets are the best that i have found. They now carry them at Long Pond. Wauregan ct.

  29. Dan says:

I have try over 10 different brands, and find that the Somersets burn the best in my stove. They are hot and have very little ash. I am very satisfied, and will definately look for them come next fall/winter.

  30. BIGG BURN says:

Iam now using someset I brought all I could from lowes burn hot I noticed a big change in heat out put from pennington so Iam mixing my pennington in with somerset and I would not hesttate to by 12 tons of someret.

  31. BIGG BURN says:

I THINK SOMESET IS A SLEEPING GIANT THESE ARE SOME HOT MOMMA’S AND MY WALL THERMOSTAT PROVES IT KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK SOMERSET

    • Jim says:

I have used many different kinds of pellets and by far somerset is the best. With other pellets I ran my stove on the 4th setting. With somerset I had to turn it down to the 2nd setting, the pellets burn HOT!. I would seriously drive to Ky. To buy more if couldn’t find them here in Mi.

  32. Barb Barish says:

We live in Norwood NY (the true “Upstate NY”) and we have been burning wood pellets for 2 years now and the Somerset Pellets we bought from Lowes burn the hotest then any other ones we have had. We can actually put our stove on 2 and it runs awesome. Putting the stove on 3 will get the house up to 80. There is also alot less ash. We sure hope Lowes will continue to sell Somerset!

    • Brian says:

      Barb,
Which other pellets have you tried in Upstate…Summer Haven’s Dry Creek, Curran’s Hard or Soft, Woodruff Block?
Just curious, there seems to be a variety of manufacturer’s and if Summerset or Clean Energy are reputable, then I may switch to Lowes…
      Thank you in advance,
      Brian

  33. Tina says:

I just have to say that I love the somerset pellets. We usually burn insta heat. Went through 3 tons this year. I refused to buy another because spring should be here. I am glad I did not buy another ton. I went to Lowes in Ithaca NY and got a few bags of pellets. I have been so excited to have purchased the Somerset Pellets. They last so much longer per bag, less ash. (I have only had to clean my stove once with the shop vac in two months), nice heat. I will not purchase any other pellet on the planet now that I have found Somerset Pellets. Next winter I am hoping with the find of these pellets I won’t go through 3 ton. Insta heat pellets are very ashes and I had to clean my stove every other day. Congrats to the makers of Somerset Pellets. You have a good thing going, I hope for everyone on here you keep up the good work.

  34. Rich in ohio says:

I bought 27 tons of summerset pellets two years. ans still have 14 ton left, they are great, am lookin to buy 2 20 more tons

  35. gary says:

Does anyone know if you can buy individual bags at Long Pond?

  37. Bob Lewis says:

Last year I purchased some of the Black label Sommerset pellets from Lowe’s in Derby Kansas and this year I can not find this brand anywhere in the area of Wichita, Kansas. Where/what stores in the area will be carring this product. I was very please with the buring/heat this product provided for our home.

  38. Pelet Stove Pipe says:

Its true. I used a ton of okies last year and a ton of somersets. The somersets had way less ash. I only had to clean the stove once every 5 days. The okies needed to be cleaned almost every day. The somersets also seemed to burn much hotter. I got mine at long pond in CT for $249 a ton.

  39. Eric says:

I like somerset pellets… can’t find them at Lowes this year. Also HD was having a sale with Freedom Pellet… I think it’s softwood .. $4.30/bag. It’s “okay”. I need to buy 3 tons and delivered… where can I get that taken care of? I’m in the greater Boston area.

  40. Greg says:

I am considering the purchase of a pellet stove but I can’t find any information regarding how many pounds of pellets that it takes to heat a small home in S.E. Wisconsin. I realize that many factors come into play, severity of the weather, size of the area to be heated, etc.; but I’m just trying to get a “ball park” estimate of what it takes to heat a 1,000 square foot home, will I need a couple of hundred pounds or 20 tons of pellets – I have NO idea.
    Thank You

    • Jeff says:

I bought a Englander pellet stove at lowe’s. It’s rated for 1500 sq. ft.. I live in central pa.. I have it set up in a 900 sq. ft. mobile home. On the lowest setting, at a outside temp. of around 30 deg., it keeps the mobile home at a 75 – 80 degrees. It does depend on how cold it is outside & how hard you burn it. The good rule of thumb is about (1) 40 lb. bag a day. I burn about 3 ton a year. 1 ton consist of (50) 40 lb. bags. My stove, I use as primary heat. Mobile home has propane furnace, but I use that as back-up heat. With propane furnace, I burn about 125 gallon @ $3.99 a gallon per month. If you do the math, that equals out to be about $500.00 a month for about 5 good months. That equals out to be $2500.00 to heat a winter. With pellets, I bought 3 ton in spring at $195.00 a ton, which equals $585.00 to heat the whole winter & have good heat. NEVER cold!! I burn Somerset or Hammer’s Hot Ones. These are the best heat pellets I found with very low ash build-up. I hope this helps you out, good luck & stay warm. Later!!!

    • brian says:

listen to jeff, he’s got it down pat. I had the same situation

  41. Dennis says:

Jeff sounds like a mirror of my situation. Summerset is the best brand ive tried so far.

  42. Tim says:

Bought 2 tons of Somerset from Long Pond CT and
burned most of them. They have my business from now on.
I burn Barefoot as well a real good pellet as well if you can’t get Somerset.

  43. scott says:

Just switched to Somerset and noticed alot more clinkers and ash and my pot getting jammed up and will not self clean and the stove stops working. In the dead of the winter in Michigan and its our only heat thats stinks. Used Pro pellet wich where good but Uncle Jeds where the best but really expensive. Oh well stuck with 2 ton for this year.

    • Jack says:

You might want to contact your pellet dealer and tell them your issue. You may not have to be stuck with pellets that don’t burn good. I hear alot of good stuff about Somerset pellets but you may have a bad batch all pellet mills have them at times.

    • Jeff says:

Might want to try increasing your air combustion setting. These summerset pellets are a hot pellet, but they are also a hard pellet. Thats what makes them hot. When you burn a hard pellet, you need more air to completely burn the pellet up because it is harder. You will get more clinkers if your burn rate is not set correctly. If the heat temp. you are getting is fine, increase the combustion air setting. If it seems to hot, lower your feed setting, but leave the air combustion setting alone. This will cut back on the amount of pellets being pushed out which will lower your heat level coming out, but in return you are still pushing the same amount of combustion air to less pellets, which will help burn your pellets more completely up. These setting you will be adjusting will be the factory setting when set at factory. Not your normal setting for increasing the temp. coming out. These setting are set at factory but are not always correct for every brand of pellet. Once you get the factory setting correct for the pellet you are burning, you pellets will be completely burnt. NO CLINKERS!! Then you just use your normal feed control & blower speed to keep the temp. you want. It takes a few bags of whatever pellet you burn, to get the right fuel feed to air combustion ratio. Maybe this will help out your problem. Good luck & stay warm.

      Later

  44. dick says:

I used Somersets last year and was very happy with them. My dealer isn’t carrying them any more. Anyone know where I can get them in eastern Mass?

    • Jack says:

Don’t know of any Somerset dealers but you might want to try some Okanagan pellets I know they are sold in Mass and people say they are some of the best out there.

  45. Todd says:

I would have to say that Somerset Pellets are by far the best pellets on the mrkt..However, If I have to pay more then $2.60 a bag it is cheeper to burn propane then wood pellets! They started out at this price approx. 5 years ago, then from there they just sky-rocketted!!!!!! Do the math,If your paying $4.60 a bag you can heat cheaper with electric or propane or probably any other type of fuel.

    • Shark says:

You might want to check one of the online fuel calculators.
We started heating (electric forced air) last year when we finished our house, & we had a couple $400+ bills.
This year using pellets (usually $3.50/bag) electric bill is $70.
      Big difference.

  46. Shark says:

I will say, somerset pellets were the best I’ve found so far (used last year). Hoping to pick some up again soon, as they are same price as Greenway this year, but the Greenway def have a bit more ash.

  47. paul says:

GARBAGE! They sooted the glass on my stove within 2-3 bags after having freshly cleaned the unit and the glass. Dark black fine almost oily/waxy soot completely covering the glass. In my opinion Lignetics are the best-if you can find them!!!
I own and operate a hearth and chimney business and have installed many units and have heated my house with a Mt. Vernon and now a Dell Point stove. We have heated our house with pellet for four years and have tried virtually every brand out there. Take this for what it’s worth.

  48. larisa says:

Everyone writes “high BTU”….does anyone know what the actual BTU rating is on the Somerset Premium pellets?? Please don’t say “high”.

  49. John Gallacher says:

So far this my third season using wood pellets .I’ve used 4 – 5 different brands
somerset pellets burn hotter than other brands . This is how it sets up( p41a )harmam stove 2500 sq ft house open layout usually at 70 degrees. Last season i burned 650 gallons of oil( house well insulated 6 ” walls top of line windows etc )My conclusion is this , invest in great stove or be blaming the pellets, there is
very little differnce in the brands I’ve used so far, but have’nt used them all, keep in mind no brand out there is going to be consistant year after year , so buy 5 or more different brands at the beginning of the heating season & hope for good results

  50. I have a Genesis 108 stove and we have burned just about all brands of wood pellets from Marth,American Fiber, Dejnos, Pennywise, Indek, and many more and I have just burned Somerset and I will say these are one of the best wood pellets I have burned. When the avg. home heats a house with a bag a day of pellets any wood pellet would do, but when you burn 2 to 3 bags a day that is when you see the real proformance of the pellet and the heat output and ash content. I would highly recommend these pellets!

  51. Jim Worful says:

First year with pellet burner.. I started with Michigan Wood Pellets (stay away from these). Hi ash build up, would burn good for the first 16 hours then the ash would build up and stove would lose heat. I was having to do a deep clean of my Harman XXV every other day. I got some somerset pellets and I am very happy so far (expecting it to drop to 0 degrees for the next few nights, that will be the real test). I have an entire pallet of Michigan wood Pellets in my garage, hoping the dealer will take them back.

  52. eileen middaugh says:

we have had our pellet stove since11/07. This is the first year we had the somerset pellets. I don’t want any other kind again. These are the greatest!!!!!!!!!!! Low ash build up and we think it really makes a diference in the heating too. Thank you for a great product.

3rd year burning Somerset’s, best pellet so far!

Somerset: Low Fines, Low Ash, High Heat, glass clean for 4 of the days, clean stove every 5-7 days.
Michigan: High fines, High Ash, High heat, clean stove once a day
Maeder Brothers: High fines, High Ash, has some heat, very dirty glass, clean stove once a day

Marth: Low Fines, Low Ash, High Heat, only bought two bags, probably buy again.
Actually took 1 ton of Maeder brothers back to the store because got sick of cleaning the stove everyday. Located SE Michigan

I have been burning wood pellets for three years and have found Somerset Wood Pellets to be one of the best. Good hear, little ash and do not have to clean the pellet burner very offen.
Would like to find a dealer in Iowa that handles only Somerset Wood Pellets. Menards and Tractor Supply do not always have Somerset on hand.

I burned a ton of Somerset last year with excellent results. Lowes stocked them last year, but not this year. I looked and looked and could not find anyone who carried them in Maryland. This year I burned Lignetics and, though these are pretty good, there is about 3 times as much ash with the Lignetics vs the Somersets. Does anyone know where I can buy Somerset in the Maryland area?

By far the BEST wood pellets. VERY clean burn. I’ve tried other brands and these are far

Returned Inferno (worst pellets ever) to Lowes [Hudson Ma] and replaced them with Somerset. Somerset is one of the best pellets I have burned so far this year – they burned hot and clean (low ash) and there is no pellet dust in the bags. I highly recommend these along with North American Pellets which I have also got from Lowes.

    Stove (Avalon Newport Bay Insert)

It’s the end of the heating season here in Western PA and found somerset pellets at a local hardware store. The owner of the store has a pellet stove and sold me 4 bags at a decent price(his last 4 bags). Excellent heat, low ash, low fines.Would like to find somerset pellets in Pgh. PA area. I will travel for these pellets for next season.

I am a Universal HVAC Tech this means I can work on steamship boilers so I do have experience. I have used my laser tester and the BTU is around 30 percent in difference from the other crud out there! If I had room I would buy a tractor trailer load just to have them! I have saved so much money going green but I also did the work myself. I have gone thru many different brands of wood pellets! Somerset is the lowest ash highest BTU output I have found to date that is at a reasonable price. I changed all the settings on my stove and I get get 3/4 of a large metal coffee can of ash per week with Somerset pellets. I save $2500 in green savings a year. My biggest problem is people call our Lowes and they are out of the Somerset pellets in less than a week of having them and the next closest Lowes run out of them the day they get them in Southeastern PA. Home Depot say they get them but have not had them to date or any for that fact. If anyone knows of a dealer in the Princeton, Bristol area of NJ let me know!

    Regards,
    Mark

I have taken everyone’s advice on this forum and purchase 3 tons (pallets) of Somerset. Getting ahead of next winter! Lowes was eager to move their existing inventory. Got each pallet for $159 a ton!!! SCORE! Very happy with price!
