Energex Wood Pellets

Energex operates two fuel pellet factories. One in Canada and one in the US. I’m pretty sure the “Energex” line is a bend of hard and softwood from Québec Canada while the “Juniata” brand is made in Pennsylvania plant and is hardwood. Energex claims they are the largest pellet fuel manufacturer in North America.

Energex seems to get favorable reviews form people. If you have any comments regarding Energex or Juniata pellets please leave them below.

We have been burning Energex this season (from Quebec) The worst ever! Same problems that I read about with the Pennington. Dust, klinkers, ash build-up, low flame, slow to start a flame. We inherited 1/2 ton of Dakota Nuggets wood pellets from my folks (they switched to gas, for ambience and ease of use only). The Dakota Pellets we have are a good 10+ years old and without a doubt the best burning fuel we have used yet. Clean, HOT, fast fire-up… But we can not get these anymore.

What to do? Anyone have experience with the Energex? Also, what sre the three top burning brands?

I am new to heating with pellets and glad to have found this site. I bought a Harman Accentra free standing stove back in July and it was installed Oct.1st.
When I bought it, there were no pellets to be had. I pre-paid for 3 tons at my local Home Depot not knowing what I was going to get, only that they were
    “Premium” wood pellet fuel.
They were delivered about mid-September and turned out to be Eureka
    Premium Pellets.
when the stove was installed, they dumped in a bag of Energex to get me started and they burned well,,,started right up, burned hot and with little ash. Well now I’m using the Eureka brand and they aren’t like the Energex, but they do burn ok. They smoke a bit when starting, create more ash and aren’t as hot.
Other than that, they’re OK. I believe the stove has something to do with it since it’s supposed to burn low quality fuel as well. (and it cranks) I’m still experimenting at this point.
Now there’s an abundance of fuel available here, but the prices are crazy.
Some dealers are getting Just under $400 a ton.(why) At those prices, and oil dropping, one must reconsider what to heat with.

This is my first year with a pellet stove. It’s been hard to find Pellets in Southern VT. So I’ve been lucky enough to round up three tons all different brands.

Premium Blazer from Home depot burn really hot and clean

Fireside ultra also from home depot same results.

I got 20 bags from tractor supply that burn great but there is no clear name on the bag. It’s a multi-colored bag might be called “Premier Pellets” burn nice and hot, low ash.

Energex from Aubochon hardware also good.

Freedom Fuel from Home depot, just ok. They do the trick but the four brands above are much better.

Pennington from Wal-mart, just so-so, not great. My stove has an agitator so it keeps them burning. Glad I only bought 15 bags of pennington.

However, beggers can’t be choosers with the shortages. Hopefully next season there will be enough to go around.

Burned almost 3/4 of a ton of Pennington Pellets with no problems. Last 2 bags I have put into the stove have left a clump of mess in my burn pot and clogged up the system. It almost acts like it is a plastic product. Getting to the bottom of the pallet, so maybe it is just the bottom bags. Energex are the best burners I have used so far. Aubuchon Hardware carries them here in Maine. I also have 1 ton of LG Granules which I am glad I haven’t burned yet!! Pennington Pelllets do have a lot of fines in the bags. Will be looking for more Energex!!!!

Also, sacray,is your stove new? I have seen a few stoves that have take a while for the paint and/or porcelain finish to outgas, sometimes emitting a bad plastic like odor. I have never seen blue specs in my ash, though. I burn Energex and Comfort pellets in my Harman Accentra (insert) and have not have any major issues. I know that other people have complained about those brands, but they have been excellent for me. If I push my stove too hard, though (high feed rate), it is possible to get uneven burning. If it is running at a happy medium, and I keep it clean, the stove runs great on both of these brands. (I might prefer the hardwood Comfort to the softwood Energex due to the increased resins in the softwood melting and solidifying in the bottom of the burn pot. Still, just a little more scraping during cleaning is all that means.)

To the guy that stated he was going to install his Central Boiler maxim 175 in his basement … DO NOT DO THIS !! it is clearly stated that the maxim 175 & 250 are to be installed outside or in a noninhabited area IE shed, garage etc. I have this unit ( central boiler maxim 175 ) and after using it for the last month I would never consider installing it in my basement period .
I am however going to reinstall it next spring in my garage . to anyone considering this unit . The maxim 175 I have has been heating my home and domestic water without issue . it has 3 feed rates as well as 3 fan rates and multible settings in each rate ( idle , medium , high , ) my idle setting is set on 4 green lights . my medium setting is set on 2 orange lights and my high is set on 2 red lights . I have fan rates just one light higher than the feed rates and so far it hasnt had to go into high unless the washing machine is on the wife is taking a shower and the heat called for for heat . so far so good and lastly . I am using energex premium hardwood pellets and am having good luck with them Although I know there is a better choice for a hotter / cleaner pellet but I got a good deal for them at 248.00 a ton

Yes also having trouble getting pellets this year north of Boston.

I have a Harman Invincible RS – 1997 model. Works great. I am SOOOO glad I didn’t buy the Walmart Pennington pellets as per advice on this board, was tempted today.

I have had great luck with:

    Dry Creek
New England Pellet (my new favorite is their GREEN SUPREME pellets – good!)
Fireside (Home Depot – good!) but not always in stock
    Granules (Canadian)
    Energex

I’m going to try Blazers (also Home Depot) based on above post. Have had good luck with HD pellets (north of boston region).

What a paradox, oil was expensive and pellets were cheap, now oil is cheap and pellets have gone thru the roof !!!

    Keep warm….

Question since I have burned LG brand and found I was using in Northern VT 1-2 tons for a winter season, last year bought some off brand that had bark burned ok but put off a lot of ash. Was thinking of going to Energex but wondered if the green bag of energex would require me to buy more tons since it is a softwood. Do you know the answer to how much burned compared to other brands?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I may be the only one on here who thinks Natures Heat pellets are ok. I burn them in a Quadra Fire Mt. Vernon AE and have had relatively no problems. I pre-ordered 3 tons of New England which I’ve been using here and there but for the most part with the scarsity of NEWP I’ve found the affordability and quality of Natures Heat to be adequate. I’ll continue to purchase and save my NEWP supply until the cost and availability of NEWP are practical again. I’ve tried several other brands ie. Lignetics and Energex which are good pellets, but the price per ton is still 50-75 more than Natures Heat. Anyone know of any other good affordable pellets north of Boston?

  9. Luny burg says:

    my 2cents.

I have an Avalon Newport pellet stove. i have tried several different brands, burning 8-10 bags of each.

    New england pellets – excellent
    lg granules – good
    energex – good
    Green team pellets – ok
Pennington Natures Heat pellets – lots of dust, not as much heat, alot more ash/clinkers – poor
forrest pride – walmart – clinkers, lots of ash – the worst

Live in northern Massachusetts and this is our first year with a pellet stove. LOVED my Englander so much by Dec we bought another and are heating the whole house with pellets. Knowing nearly nothing about pellets we bought our inital tons from Wal-Mart and Home Depot..both were Pennington Natures Heat. Yes, they were very dusty, but the heat generated was super! Needed to purchase more pellets again in Feb and couldn’t get Pennington so bought Energex from a local stove shop. They worked great but don’t seem to throw as much heat as Pennington. Have been reading the postings here and looks like maybe we got lucky and get a good batch of Pennington, but we still haven’t had any issues with them. We just bought one more ton (our biggest draw-back being new at this..no idea how many tons we would burn) and we bought Pennington again and still no issues..throw tremendous heat..more than Energex. I would use them again (either one). One issue we did have was with Maine Wood Pellets. Our neighbor had trouble burning them and offered the rest of them to us. We also were not thrilled with their performance (but free is free). They were OK, but not anything we would purchase again. We’re hoping some of the prices come down before we have to stock up for next year. We used about 6 tons, but it was a cold, snowy winter here. Still beats heating with oil, hands down. That cost us over $2700 in 2007-2008 and that was with the thermostsat at 65 and the coldest room closed off! We’re absolutley sold on pellets!

Bad clinkers from Energex in a Quadra-Fire Santa Fe. Barefoot by contrast does much better.

  12. beaner says:

energex products are over priced and over rated.massive clinkers

  13. Ernie says:

I sell both pellets and stoves…..there is a world of difference in pellets…..you just get what you pay for…..if you shop for price alone expect to get poor quality…..and will wish you had shopped quality instead…….i sell Lignetics (1% ash) and Hamer super premium (1/2% ash). Both are good quality products…….

In 2008-2009 there was a shortage of pellets on the east coast…….we had pellets shipped in from other manufactures out of state and they were poor and lots of headaches, ash, and clinkers!!….both manufactures claimed they were hard wood, low ash, and burned hot, but they did not deliver!!……but our clients were happy to have heat as many rely 100% on pellets for heat…….but disappointed with their performance……some drove over 1 1/2 hours to get pellets for heat….

This season (2009-2010) they all are glad we can once again obtain our usual premium brands……….NOTE…if there is no PELLET INSTITUTE membership, seal and information box on the bag, you are buying a pig-in-a-poke…….you have no idea what is in the bag!!……..

Once the euphoria of the low price fades, the depression of poor quality sets in……..

We have an Avalon Astoria (6 years old) and have been burning Energex American pellets since we owned the stove. We bought 4 ton of them last Spring based on past performance. Unfortunately, the Energex Americans are a much different pellet this year than they have been. We are VERY disappointed and won’t buy them again. Lots of clinkers, very high ash, lower heat output. Replaced the igniter and combustion blower this year. The pellet stove is great and runs as it should. From what I have been reading on the Internet many others are experiencing the same disappointment in Energex as we are.

  16. c walton says:

Juniata were the worst pellets we ever had. Caused respiratory problems, left lots of ash, heated poorly and did not stand by product.

  17. J.Rice says:

I have been burning pellets now for 3 years. I’ve tried alot of different brands of pellets. When I see a new brand I’ve never seen before, I buy 2 or 3 bags & give them a try. By far, the Juniata (Energex) have been the worst pellet I have ever burned. I actually bought a ton of these from a local stove shop and was not at all impressed. I ended up selling off about 40 bags of the 50 bag ton. People, DON’T waste your money on these pellets. Like I said, I’ve tried alot of different brands, alot were good. The best I think I used are Hamer’s Hot Ones. They burn real hot and don’t leave alot of ash. Turman burn good also, little ash but not alot of heat. I normally burn these early in the season and then switch to a hotter brand as it gets colder. I just got 3 bags of Somerset Pellets to try today. Ran accross them at my local Lowe’s store in Shippensburg PA.. I see alot of good comments about them. By the comments I have read, they seem alot like Hamers Hot One Brand. Other brand that seem to work fine are: Pennwood, Natue’s Own, Greene Team, Marth Wood, Hamer’s Hot Ones, Turman.

Does anyone have a King Pellet 5510 stove? My dad purchased one for me in November of 2009 and we have been experimenting with different pellets. So far we have only used the ones sold at Tractor Supply which is where I purchased the pellet stove. After just one night after cleaning the entire stove the previous night I already have ash/soot on the glass (black). Can anyone suggest a pellet that might burn good in this type of stove? It seems like alot of people who have posted have different stoves and have had luck with different pellets. I see some more than others have luck with the Fireside Ultra pellets from Home Depot. I have also researched different sites and was told that Okanangan has a great pellet, Ash at .38%. Does anyone know anything about these pellets?

  19. Bill says:

Got a ton of Energex pellets from my local distributor and man these pellets give off some nice heat in my Harman Accentra stove. Got the 50/50 and they really heat well. Don’t think I’ll ever get another pellet. I am hooked on these. Excellent product from Quebec, Canada. No dust in the bag and very low ash in my burn pot and they burn clean. Would reccomend these pellets to anyone

I have been burning Energex all season. They do leave a lot of ash. I have found they burn very hot but the ash residue is bad. I would not purchase them again.

i have a whitfield advantage t2 insert (great stove) love it. i use it as my primary heating source in a fairly large home..the first year i used i experimented with pellets..lignetics were not bad..hated new england pellets, this year i bought energex on many recommdations and i love them, i love the size and they burn very hot and very minamal clinkering, will definately burn again next season

Juniata I am not happy with.

  23. Lisa says:

    Dear All:

I have always bought Energex with the American Eagle on the bag and I am happy with them. My dealer is now offering Energex Juniata. Does anyone have any experience with the Juniata pellets? My dealer says it is the same pellet as the Energex with the Eagle.

    Any response will be helpful.

    Thank You,
    Lisa

Don’t buy them, they are junk. I bought a ton of them, burned 10 bags and sold the other 40 bags. Good heat, lots of ash and clinkers. Buy Hamers Hot Ones or somerset. These are both hot pellets with very low ash.
