    Hello All,
I have gotten alot of information from all of you on this website and wanted to share my experiences with you also. I am a sub-contractor at The Home Depot and have tried atleast 8-10 bags of all pellets that they carry. The best pellets I have tried are the Pennington Brand Premium Hardwood pellets.I tried Walmarts brand the yrs before last and had some no-burn pellets,ok heat and average on the fines. I have tried the fireside pellets to they were ok, also Corinth Wood Pellets made here in Maine, and had lots of ash, and low heat. Last year I burned Cubex Premium Hardwood pellets from Canada and loved them all winter long. Only cleaned out my little burn pot every two weeks> This year I am assured that the 3 new pellet mfg. plants that Pennington has are up to better then standards. So,I bought my four tons at Home Depot 3 weeks ago at 229.00 a ton. They have since gone up to 249.00 a ton, get them while you can. I will say while moving pellets into my basement that I had several bags break and I saw a difference in color amongst some of the pellets.

Can anybody provide feedback on the following brands… Corinth, Eergex, Oak Creek, Naragansett & Maine? Thanks.

Corinth wood pellets are junk!! Beware, stay away. My Harman 25th Anniversary kept shutting down on me due to poor combustion. After having my stove looked at by a technician, it was determined the crappy Corinth pellets were the cause. I burnt a bag of another brand and my stove ran fine.

      • Amanda says:

Please have your stove looked at, people with Harmons that have been burning pellets for years are having a hard time with maine pellets this year and 9 times out of 10 it has been restricted airflow issues causing the problems

      • Ron Girard says:

I Have been burning wood pellets since 2003 . With a Harman Advance pellet stove used many different pellets Ambiance pellets ,Cubex to name a few with little to no difficulties. But since i have been using Corinth pellets, I have to clean my stove ash pan and glass on a regular basis. Something that i didn’t have to do with the others. Also my stove makes a loud grinding sound every time i start it the auger is working very hard, These pellets are supposed to be hardwood but i think they may be mixed .Talked to friends that are experiencing the same problems and we came to the conclusion that we won’t be buying Corinth pellets again!!!!

Maine resident….has anyone tried Corinth Wood Pellets made in Corinth Maine ??? This is my first year using pellet stove, only tried Fireside Ultra so far, nothing to compare with yet.

  4. MikeP says:

    Hello Maine ladies,
I picked up a ton of the Maine pellets made in Athens for $295. They are uniform in size and have a green color. Looks exactly like large rabbit feed. They are horrible in my top feeding stove. Low heat lots of ash, fines and clinkers. After running all night on a high setting my burn pot is one solid clinker that I have to break up with a screw driver. I’ve tried leaving the damper open to a point where the fire would barely stay lit and it doesn’t help. The only way I can get rid of them is to mix with Penningtons. However, I swapped a couple bags of those for the Maine pellets made in Corinth with a coworker. Those burned excellent in my stove and he didn’t have any problems burning mine (Athens). His stove is a bottom fed Harmon.

Once I got used to using my Breckwell Big-E, the Penningtons burn nicely. No complaints and I wish I could trade the Maine pellets from Athens for something else (I’m in Buxton if anyone is interested). It sounds like there are better brands out there. I’ll never buy a whole ton without first trying a few bags.

I hope the price of pellets to go down soon. If not I’ll probably get the oil burner going. Everyone is selling for about $300 / ton in So. Maine. At these prices the only benefit to burning wood is the comfort of knowing your using a renewable resource. IMHO

After burning a ton of Corinth Wood Pellets I was extremely disappointed. They burn fast and you need to empty the burn pot every four hours. They are also loaded with corn, including the occasional full kernel. I wanted to buy local but will never burn Corinth Wood pellets again. Terrible product. I also think that the claims that they are hardwood should be investigated.

  6. TG says:

Jesus…is there a pellet out there available in central maine that does not burn too much ash or will destroy your stove at a reasonable price? Every brand I’ve read about seems to be horrible. Corinth pellets seem to be everywhere but they want $285 per ton. Oil isn’t that much of a difference at this point.

  7. Jim Flavin says:

This is the fourth winter with our Harmon Wood Stove. I have tried several different brands of wood pellets. The second year I purchased six ton of a Northern Maine Brand that kept cloging up my auger and then the stove would shut down. I had to crush them by hand and mix with another type 1:1 and then had better luck. The third year I purchased Corinth Premium Pellets. They came in the same bag that is at the top of this page. They were execellent!! They burned well, little ash and kept us warm. This year I picked up 6 ton of Cornith Premium Pellets again. This year they came in a blue bag. I found that they do not burn as hot, there is a huge amount of ash and they leave a hard sticky residue around the inside of the stove. Is this a different pellet from last year? How can I get the ones in the brown bag with the moose on it? What do I ask for? They seem to have been a more “PREMIUM” pellet.

    • Rick Jones says:

The bag with the Moose on it are softwood pellets. Corinth Wood Pellets now only makes hardwood pellets which come in the blue bag. I burned the hardwood ones in the blue bag and they are absolute junk!!! My stove stopped working due to these crappy hardwood pellets.

  8. Todd says:

Now I’ve burned a lot of different brands of pellets, and find that in my Quadra Fire that the soft wood give me a lot of ash, but less clinkers, and hard wood, less ash but more clinkers. 2 years ago I mostly burned the Corinth pellets, at that time they only had the soft wood, good heat, but did burn a litttle faster then other pellets I’ve used. Last year pellets were harder to get and burned whatever they were selling at Lowes, the Depot, and Wally’s. This year I’ve burned some Pennington pellets, lots and lots of ash, right now I’m trying the Corinth hardwood pellets in the blue bag, not the bag pictured above. So far they seem great, not a lot of ash at all, and almost no klinkers either, if they continue like this, next week when the 10 bags are gone, I’m thinking I’ll have 2 tons delivered.

  9. Bill says:

I am burning Corinth Hardwood pellets in one of my 2 Harman Stoves this winter. So far no complaints. A very good pellet that is compressed very well. Good heat. Recommend these pellets to anyone. Can’t wait to try them in my Harman Accentra next month.

  10. James says:

I ran Corinth pellets in 2007-2008 and had lots of ash and combustion issues. In 08-09 i burned Bayou hardwood pellets and LOVED them. Incredible heat, very low ash. A very fine product. I couldn’t get them this year and bought another ton of Corinth and am once again extremely disappointed. It looks like they are about 50% bark. They are 1.5 to 2 inches long, they clog my auger, and between high ash, poor heat, and having to relight my stove sometimes as frequently as 5 times an hour, and am extremely dissatisfied. I will NEVER buy Corinth again.

  11. Peter G says:

It’s hard to make sense of all the reviews out there regarding which pellet is best, etc. In fact, last year I burned every single pellet brand that I could get a hold of in Northern Maine in an attempt to troubleshoot a problem with my Harman Accentra, and all of them burned about the same, creating enormous amounts of creosote. Of course, it wasn’t the pellets at all but a problem with the stove, and with too much ventilation constriction caused by a number of factors. To make a long story short, the problem was for the most part resolved, and I am now burning Corinth pellets, in the blue bag, with excellent results. My creosote buildup is almost non-existent, compared to what I was experiencing.

    • Amanda Clawson says:

      Hi Pete,
I am glad to see that your pellet issue has been resolved! Please don’t ever hesitate to contact us at the mill with any feedback good or bad!

I’ve also been burning wood pellets for five years and have tried every pellet made in Maine with Cirinth being the best, However they only now make hardwood. I feel they are junk like all the others made in Maine. I am now burning “Spruce Pointe” a pellet made in Canada. And i’m very happy with them. They’re a softwood pellet, rated at 8700 btu’s and I’m only cleaning my stove every 2 or 3 weeks(I cant do that with any Maine Pellet.)…

  13. Jim Quatrale says:

I bought 2 tons of corinth pellets blue bag for 2009/2010
Heating season, Bag says premium grade.
The distributor said they were 100% hardwood.

These pellets are crap. low heat, lots of ash, clinkers.
Have to clean my ash pot once a week.
They are not uniform in length size or color.
Many pellets are dark brown in color, probably due to lots of tree bark.
Many of the pellets are 2 1/2″ to 3″ in length.
And keep clogging up my hopper and auger
On my bottom fed Harmon XXV anniversary stove.
Stove has lost fire 3 times after burning 20 bags this winter
Due to 3″ length pellets Jamming pellet feed system on this stove.

I will never buy Corinth pellets again

    • DJ says:

I purchased Maine pellets from a dealer in Canada but was given two tons of Corinth and what a nightmare. Amanda at the plant was very nice and wanted to help out but I had burned them by then and had experienced a a lovely flue fore after only 100 bags, that was fun. The sticky residue and the klinkers and ash are horrible these pellets did not stand up to the competition. I am burning a Shaw pellet now white in color with no resdidue no clinkers and very little ash. The proof is in the pudding.

Try out small samples of pellets before rushing out to get them by the ton.

I sell both pellets and stoves…..there is a world of difference in pellets…..you just get what you pay for…..if you shop for price alone expect to get poor quality…..and will wish you had shopped quality instead…….i sell Lignetics (1% ash) and Hamer super premium (1/2% ash). Both are good quality products…….

In 2008-2009 there was a shortage of pellets on the east coast…….we had pellets shipped in from other manufactures out of state and they were poor and lots of headaches, ash, and clinkers!!….both manufactures claimed they were hard wood, low ash, and burned hot, but they did not deliver!!……but our clients were happy to have heat as many rely 100% on pellets for heat…….but disappointed with their performance……some drove over 1 1/2 hours to get pellets for heat….

This season (2009-2010) they all are glad we can once again obtain our usual premium brands……….NOTE…if there is no PELLET INSTITUTE membership, seal and information box on the bag, you are buying a pig-in-a-poke…….you have no idea what is in the bag!!……..

Once the euphoria of the low price fades, the depression of poor quality sets in……..

I have been buying Cubex pellets for two years now and have been satisfied with this product except for the price. I decided to purchase Corinth pellets,to give them a try but after reading coments I may look for other options. Can you suggest an alternative? I had bad luck with Pennington when I first started using pellets, lots and lots of powdery ash and not much heat.

  15. Walt says:

I decided to try Cornith pellets this year and what a mistake. I am having to clean my stove more than ever before and the heat output is much lower than other brands i have used. Do yourself a favor and stay clear of these pellets unless you have nothing better to do then throw your money away and clean your stove.

I know i will never buy them again!

  16. lOREN says:

I have used pellets to heat my home for 2 years, (both years supply bought from home depot and lowes) I have had no problems with either of the supplies. My stove is an englander. My mother has a pel pro stove and cannot use the corinth pellets they jam the auger, clog the burn pot and create a ton of ash and clinkers. they put out half the heat of the other brands with a lot more ash. She wanted to get rid of them so I took them to use in my stove as it auto adjusts to various quality of pellets. What a mistake for the first time in 2 years my stove failed to adequatley heat my house, and i had to go to my oil back-up(temps in the teens). as soon as I went back to the lowes pellets, my stove started working properley and heated my home(2200 sf) I agree with the gentleman above use the corinth pellets to sand your driveway, or as animal bedding, they are useless for anything else.

  17. Peter says:

I have an older stove and have had to try many different brands. This year I went back to Corinth pellets after trying other brands including Athens. The Corinth Pellets did not give quite as much heat, measured at the blower at stove front) but they did create clinkes to the point that my fire pot clogged and shut the stove down. I’m looking at clinkers the size of small eggs. I have never had clinker issues with Athens Pellets and have since gone back to burning those. Anyone have experience with the pellets from Ashland?

  18. Gary says:

If you enjoy cleaning your stove on a daily basis with lots of soot and ash then Corinth Pellets are for you. These are the worst pellets we have ever used!!!! This winter we have literally been a slave to our pellet stove due to the poor quality of the corinth pellets. I have done my end of the year cleaning of the stove 5 times already and the season isn’t over yet! Do yourself a favor and stay away from these low quality pellets.

  19. Raymond J Mailloux says:

I’ve been burning pellets for the past nine years. i’ve been burning New England pellets up until 2009/2010 season We bought 5 truck loads of wood pellets from corinth wood pellets.Never again will i buy these pellets again they did nothing but plug my stove up with ash and soot. I’ve never had to clean my stove out as much as i did with these pellets! All the people that went in on these loads had nothing but problems with there stoves, with all the same problems that i had, going back to New England Pellets!

  20. Don says:

This was my second full season of heating my house with a Breckwell Big “E”. Last year I burnt 7 ton of the Corinth pellets which was a different combination pellet than this year, which are supposed to be hardwood. This year I have gone thru less pellets but had so many problems having to clean the pot and passages and having problems with the stove shutting downseveral times. They are crap! I am stuck with severl bags now and paid for them. I have spent four days troubleshooting this stove with the fire going out cleaning, replacing the forced draft induction motor, flu pipe, etc…only to find out that everything we did, we put the original motor back on and found out that it was the pellets. They look different (brown and size) burn terrible and caused me many sleepless/cold nights cleaning out my stove. What happened to the softwood pellets that worked beautiful last year? If it isn’t broke don’t fix it…….Corinth lost us as a customer, that’s for darn sure!
Luckly, it’s late in the season where I won’t have the need to burn the stove but now I have to find a pellet around the Guilford area at a reasonable price and in quantity for next year. Any suggestions? Drop me a e-mail please at mathewsfarm@myfairpoint.net. Thanks

  21. bob says:

these are the worst pellets I ever used – exorbitant ash, jammed augers due to 2″ plus length, low heat output, much powder in every bag, soot/dust everywhere, and corn visible in the bag. Corinth stated they would replace my pellets, but I have not heard from the company or the dealer (Nils Auto, Derry, NH) in months. The frustration in dealing with these defects and the lack of response from the company and dealer leads me back to oil. bob
