I live in Puyallup, Washington. I am a new Pellet stove owner. I bought a
Lopi Stove and not sure what kind of pellets to use. I bought Blazer named
Pellets from Dels Farm not sure if $5.50 per bag. They are advertising
Armstrong Brand for $180.00 a ton. Does anyone know what I should buy??
    Thank you,

We also bought a Lopi last year and had a lot of problems with the ash clogging….not sure if it was the stove or the pellets. How did your’s work and which pellets did you try? We used Ozark hardwood but want to try a new kind this year. Thanks.

I have owned a Lopi Firefox pellet stove since around 1995. This years purchase of a ton at Home Depot has been a disaster. The fire pot clogs up within 5 hours. I have to shut it down and clean it. I just purchased 5 sacks of ATLAS brand. The stove works as it should. Now I am stuck with 25 sacks of poor grade pellets.

I have been burning golden fire for the last year and am very happy with them, just two weeks ago I tried Blazers made in Oregon and they are great. The blazers are very low ash and the heat output is fantastic, I purchased these at my local home depot.

  5. Pelletman says:

I have tried Armstrong, Lignetics, Blazer, and Bear Mountatin Pellets.
Bear Mountain pellets are by far the BEST (very very very little ash, NO clinkers, and hot)……next are Lignetics and Blazer, and last is Armstrong. Bear Mountain pellets are about about $45/ton more than Lignetics or Blazer and about 65/ ton more than Armstrong.
In my stove, ( Lennox Montage) all 3 brands burnt well, but Armstrong left alot of clinkers in the burn pot and and Armstrong, Blazer, and Lignetics burned very dirty…as evidenced by my glass viewing window. I will pay the extra money for Bear Mountain. I think the extra heat produced by Bear Mountain partially offsets the cost. At the very least, you should do a comparison……and see if you agree

We sell Bazers wood pellets for 250/ton

  9. Laurie says:

I just bought Blazer brand @ Home Depot today, for $209/ton. We’re new to pellet stoves, and will be installing a Harman insert in 2 weeks. Is this a good price and brand?

  10. david says:

I tested 4 bags of blazer last year poor quality.Fireside from homedepot are better. The best pellet I used was Bearfoot this year I am using Newengland not bad but not the best.

  11. Doris says:

I have a whitfield pellet stove it is about 20 years old very good stove. I use to get very good pellets made in Oakville WA. but plant burnt down a couple years ago so about the only choice sold in this area was Manke clean burn made in Tacoma WA. Well I have had more trouble with those supposedly clean burn pelletsI have had to have several tons replaced and finally decided not to fight them any more they never burned up.completely and would soon stack ip up in the fire pot and my stove would get all black inside. I saw the Blazer pellets at home depot and have been using them for a few months and they are sure a lot better. With the Manke pellets you could get a bag or two that burned ok but then in the same ton find more than half that were very inferior they are not a brand one can count on.

  12. Ernie says:

I sell both pellets and stoves…..there is a world of difference in pellets…..you just get what you pay for…..if you shop for price alone expect to get poor quality…..and will wish you had shopped quality instead…….i sell Lignetics (1% ash) and Hamer super premium (1/2% ash). Both are good quality products…….

In 2008-2009 there was a shortage of pellets on the east coast…….we had pellets shipped in from other manufactures out of state and they were poor and lots of headaches, ash, and clinkers!!….both manufactures claimed they were hard wood, low ash, and burned hot, but they did not deliver!!……but our clients were happy to have heat as many rely 100% on pellets for heat…….but disappointed with their performance……some drove over 1 1/2 hours to get pellets for heat….

This season (2009-2010) they all are glad we can once again obtain our usual premium brands……….NOTE…if there is no PELLET INSTITUTE membership, seal and information box on the bag, you are buying a pig-in-a-poke…….you have no idea what is in the bag!!……..

Once the euphoria of the low price fades, the depression of poor quality sets in……..

  13. Eileen says:

Dry Creek experience was great. This year I’m burning PA pellets. Not happy with them at all. Bought enough for the whole season and when they’re gone, I’ll be buying a different brand. Heat output is low, bags have a lot of loose sawdust in them and some have pellet chunks the size of golf balls and larger. Have had to clean out my hopper and auger twice.

  14. Warren says:

I burned Eco-Flame pellets fro colorado and have had no problems with them, they burn hot 8400 btu and very little ash 1% . last year I used harwood pellets from Badgerland pellets and had nothing but problems, like to much soot and carbon buildup on the burn pot.
I have tryed Bear Mtn pellets before and will be using them next year they are a bit pricey though.

  15. Lynne says:

I bought a Thelin Co. stove…and I have used nothing but Blazer Brand pellets…TOP NOTCH. I went to Home Depot on 2-22-10 to buy more pellets and they advised they were out and they would not be getting anymore in for the season..To say the least I was not very happy…then went to Lowes and they were out as well (don’t know what brand they carry) but advised me to go to the feed store. I did that and brought another brand they advised me was hardwood. It produced very high ash and causes the stove window to blacken up quickly and were hard to start. I’m in Minden Nevada…Is there any other outlet in the Carson Valley Area besides Home Depot?

    • Amy Hill says:

Lynne, Hi my name is Amy and I was doing some research on the Blazer pellets. I saw you live in the Minden Carson area and could not find pellets right now. I just wanted to let you know the Reno Costco will be carring the Blazer pellets this year and I dont’t have an exact arrival date yet. If you have any questions please let me know. Contact number 775-240-4212 or you could email me.Thank you ~ Amy

    • lucille says:

Ace hardware, Meeks Lumber and Costco all carry pellets. I live in G’ville and also have a pellet stove. I prefer Lignetics brand.

  16. brian says:

we have tryed several brands of pellets and lobe the bearfoot the best , lignetics are good for ambiance but less heat stay away from newenglander, chunked up constantly

    • Marq says:

I am using Blazers now and they were good. I have used Green Supreme and Eastern Embers. am hearing that Bearfoot and BearMountain are excellent. I live in Central Massachusetts and need to make a decision for next heating season. Are there any great recommendations? We’ve only had our insert for two seasons and it is our primary heating source. I would appreciate any feedback.

i just bought 10 tons of blazer pellets from costco @ 200.00 per,,,,i’ve tried many brands of pellets in the past and have had the best luck with golden fire,,,,i tried blazer about 10 years ago and was very disappointed with the performance,,,i hope these burn better,,,,lowes carries golden fire @ 239 per ton.

    • Melissa says:

I am in Massachusetts… What Costco did you find Blazer at? The cost is over $300/ton at local garden store.

  18. Mike says:

Around here in Placer County. Blazer Pellets were $199 at Costco. Lignetics were $250 at Ace Hardware. Golden Fire (my personal favorite) is going for $269. All prices are by the ton. I haven’t checked HD or Lowes yet for prices.

bought a ton of blazer pellets for $183.99 at costco in hillsboro, or

  20. Sean says:

Does anyone else feel the Blazer quality decrease from last year to this year? I thought maybe I got a bad bag but I’ve gone through about 15-20 bags now and am having to empty the burn pot daily and the glass is very dirty. I used Blazer last year and could go a week without issue.

    • Sean says:

Follow up to my above post. I removed panels and fully cleaned my stove, checked the exhaust pipe and disconnected the air intake. When I started it up it ran perfectly and was clearly burning clean. As soon as I reconnected the air intake there was an obvious reduction in air flow. I took the cover off the outside of the house to find that inside the louvered cover there is a very fine screen that had become clogged. I didn’t realize there was a screen so didn’t think it could have been clogged. Lesson – if you’re not burning clean disconnect your air intake and see what happens. I’m back in business! Blazer pellets not the culprit.

  21. John says:

Recently purchased a full pallet of blazer pellets still in shrinkwrap from Home Depot. After burning a few bags, noticed my stove was not running as well as it normally did. In the hopper I observed an excessive amount of pellet dust which was never there with my previous brand of pellets. Upon opening the next bag of pellets, I put them thru a screen to separate the pellets from the dust and found that I had more than two full cups of dust in this bag. Repeated the same procedure for the next bag with similar result.

Contrary to the other comments posted on this website, I did not find the Blazer Premium pellets to be as good as other brands I have used in the past. I believe this pallet of blazer pellets will be the last that I purchase.

  22. david says:

I sift all my pellets to get out dust and small chips.I have had 2 auger jams in the passed and when I took the stove appart it was cloged with dust and chips. I use barefoot or hammers hotones

Today is the day I’m trying a different wood pellet I’ve been using Bear mountain and were okay I’m going with lignectics this time What is better?

  25. dave says:

Ihave been using pellets for heat for 8 years now. Ihave used several kinds.Blazer and golden fire are the best i have found. but this year i am having trouble with blazer .they ash up make clunkers and my window is always sooted. I use 5-6 tons a year.thought it was my stoves giving me all this trouble but talking to friends and neighbors they are having the same problem what has blazer done to make these bad pellets ? will be looking for different pellets next year.

  26. donovan says:

Costco where I live is already out of pellets. Went to Lowe’s. First, I was shocked at the price difference, then I was shocked at the price difference in types of pellets – both claimed “premium” and both were members of the wood institute. So I went with the cheaper eco pellets. They were a total mess. Tons of ash, gave me a severe headache. Suddenly I was panicked that my brand was sold out.

After getting through the 4th bag of the eco-pellets, I went back and got some Bayou pellets. Also, not good. And they cost 5.37/bag. They burned too slowly to keep up with the lowest setting of my auto-feed and they are hard to start. Most important, they don’t produce enough heat.

I returned the remainder of the Bayou pellets and got some Blazer pellets at Home Depot – for much less (3.94/bag). Still waiting for the rest of the Bayous to pass through. I feel optimistic from what I’ve read here, but I am sorely missing the Costco brand – can’t even remember what they are called. I’ve never had to think about it since Costco never runs out this early. We’ve had a cold snap in Albuquerque and there are problems serving gas to many homes around the state, so there was a run on pellets and electric heaters.

C’mon, Blazers. Don’t let me down. I got the last 4 bags.

      BLAZER PELLET UPDATE*******
Blazer pellets are also not a good product.
I loaded the stove with the Blazer pellets only to discover they look exactly the same as the Bayou pellets. They both have this plastic-like coating and are even the same color – hey indistinguishable from each other.

The brand I was getting at Costco did not have the coating and burned quite well. It’s this coating that seems to act like some kind of time release for burning. I sat and watched pellets drop an actually smother the combusted pellets. This would eventually extinguish the fire – same problem as Bayou: the pellets would not burn fast enough to keep up with the LOWEST setting of the feed. Watching these pellet resist burning, it’s like they’re coated with fire retardant. So frustrating.

This is now the fourth brand I’ve tried since Costco ran out of their supply of pellets. I’m officially frustrated. I’ll be returning these Blazer pellets to Home Depot today.

  27. Mohamed says:

I would be grateful if anyone could help with this query!!

I’ve tried 3 different types of wood pellets on our industrial heater, however the amount of ash in the combustor tray is very high. We have to clean it out daily and this is not acceptable for an industrial application.

Apparently the same heater and the same fuel work elsewhere ??
I am slightly puzzled. Am I not reaching the right combustion point for the heater ?? Is it to do with flu draught ??
