There is always debate on the subject of hardwood versus softwood pellets.
When talking about firewood it’s universally known that hardwood is better.
Based on my experience with firewood it always seemed to me that softwood burns hotter, but not as long as hardwood.

Many people buying pellets look for brands that use hardwood to manufacture the pellets. I don’t think you can make the same assumptions that hardwood is better for wood pellets. Firewood is sold by volume, usually the cord or 128 cubic feet. Wood pellets are sold by weight, usually 40lb bags.

Since you are buying by weight I don’t think it matters if the pellets are hardwood or softwood. I haven’t had the chance to compare but I suspect a 40lb bag of hardwood pellets are smaller than a 40lb bag of softwood pellets.

This season I bought 3 tons of Fireside pellets from my local Home Depot. The regular price was $299/ton but they had a sale and offered $100 off if you bought three tons. I also took advantage of a 10% discount if you used the home depot credit card to pay. It brought the price down to $240/ton.

I used Fireside two seasons ago and they were pretty decent.

Well it’s the middle of summer. What better time to start thinking about wood pellets?
Shopping around it looks like prices have gone up by $40-$50 per ton compared to last year.

I had a good experience with Dry Creek Pellets last year and they will be my first choice this year.

I’m not taking chances. I just ordered 3 tons of Dry Creek pellets for next season for $235/ton plus delivery.

When I hear what people are paying for fuel oil I cringe. I’ll be able to heat the whole season for what most people are paying for one fill of the oil tank.

I have had a LOT of friends and relatives ask me about pellet stoves. Installers are booked up till November. I think there will be a large demand for pellets this fall. If you can swing it I would consider ordering now.
